The next time you crack open an egg, save that shell. It can be a perfect seed starter.
Here’s what to do :
Try to crack the egg in half to produce two good seed starters.
Rinse out the shells and store them in an egg carton.
When you’re ready to plant your seeds, use a seed-starting mix (not soil from your garden). It’s best to use a fresh, sterile mix. Put the mix in a bucket or other container and moisten it.
Fill the eggshell halves with the moistened mix.
Plant your seeds, two to each half-shell. Check the directions on the seed packet to plant at the proper depth.
Use a mister when needed to moisten the soil.
Place the egg carton where it will get sunlight or under fluorescent or grow-lights.
If both seeds sprout, pinch off one so there is one seedling per eggshell.
When the seedlings are ready to be planted outdoors, plant them shells and all. The eggshells will break down and add minerals to the soil.
Seed starting time is here, so get cracking!
P.S. Remember to keep a record of the seeds you plant, when you plant them, when they sprout, and so on in your
GARDEN JOURNAL and PLANNER!
